Events are not necessarily community building, but can be used to help build community.
Previously at Ministry of Testing we did conferences where they became a real community buzz and a way for people to gather and re-connect once or twice a year.
I think it is this re-connection angle that is important, the more you can reconnect and build relationships, the more people will appreciate it and naturally come back.
What worked well for us:
- help people feel welcome on the day
- organise a ton of social activities before, during and after the event
- build community online throughout the year
- take and share photos, memories is marketing
- publish and share talks
- have almost all speakers be from within the community
