Lots of community building doesn't look like community building

When we build community, often the things we don’t look like community building.

  • troubleshooting
  • helping people
  • sending emails
  • research
  • conversations
  • email marketing
  • writing

What things do you do in your day to day job that some people may think isn’t community building?

  • Going through Linkedin and Twitter to find what members are writing and responding with my opinion, not the community-related opinion.
  • Reading books that community members mentioned somewhere in the conversation
  • Sending photos of my dogs to people

Something I want to do more of: engaging in communities that are adjacent to the one I manage. Finding community “in the wild”. Finding, exploring, and taking time to admire the work of people in the community.

Yes, I feel this is such an important part of community discovery too. Understanding your ecosystem, being a part of it, learning from it, and contributing/supporting it — it will all help you build a better community.
